grand jury

Kids FIRST is the site of Lane County’s specially convened grand jury for child abuse cases. Held at our center, grand jury is a District Attorney’s Office court hearing that includes an assigned Assistant District Attorney, seven jurors from our Lane County community, and any subpoenaed witnesses. A Victim Advocate from the District Attorney’s Office Victim Services may be present to provide information and support while

grand jury is in session.

The purpose of grand jury is to establish which charges are appropriate to be filed based on the investigation by a law enforcement agency, the testimony of a child, and any other witnesses involved. Grand jury is typically not as thorough as the forensic interview process and is formatted with more direct questions.

Not all child abuse cases will result in grand jury.
